Halloween 2024

I’m proud to say—because I’ve been dreaming of this for years—that 2024 was our most epic family costume yet. Wes was absolutely perfect as Smalls, Owen’s bubble gum accessory was surprisingly clutch, and Hazel made the perfect Beast.

Halloween night turned into a total downpour, so trick-or-treating was a soggy mess—but we made the most of it. Thankfully, the weather mostly held out for our annual house party, giving us a chance to rock our costumes without parkas. The night was full of laughter, friends, and just the right amount of chaos—another one for the books.

Back to School 2024

Owen is heading into 6th grade at Harbor Ridge Middle School, Wes is in 4th grade with Mrs. DeLos Santos, and Hazel is in 2nd grade with Mrs. Necessary. We’re looking forward to another exciting year of learning and growth.

7-Year-Old Love Letter

My sweet Hazel Grace,

You are seven years old and living your best life. This week alone, you went to horse camp and had multiple sleepovers with Lizzie, your cousin bestie, all before your Taylor Swift-themed party.

You are thoughtful and considerate, yet also sassy and fierce. You care deeply about your friends and have become quite skilled at navigating first-grade drama. Your teacher describes you as quiet, but I know you as wild when you’re playing with your friends. You get super excited about things and have a hard time playing it cool.

Your reading skills took off shortly after first grade began. It started with the Elephant and Piggie books, then the level-one readers, and within a month, you were diving into every book on the shelf. You prefer reading independently over listening, and I often find you with a book light long after you’ve been tucked in. I always dreamed of having an avid reader, and I think I might have one in you.

You danced all year and took piano lessons for six months. You didn’t love hip-hop class until the recital, where your love of being on stage really shone through. Your skiing skills grew by leaps and bounds this year, and you’re signed up for another season of soccer in the fall. As you love to say, “Westie is your bestie”—you two laugh and play together constantly. Your obsession with stuffed and real animals continues strong. You got your ears pierced on a whim in December. You talk about crushes often and have picked up some sass from your peers. This summer marked a big developmental leap—you became more aware of how you look and even feel embarrassed sometimes. You describe others as “trying to be cool.”

A visit with a urologist revealed that your bladder muscles are underdeveloped, which explains the urgency you’ve experienced since potty training. You’re a total snuggler and never want to be left out of anything. Your fashion sense has evolved into bike shorts and animal t-shirts, with tutus now a rare sight. Dresses are out, and stripes are a no-go.

In early September, you cut your hair at a sleepover with the Hights. You and Brady Mae were watching The Parent Trapand decided that if you cut your hair, you’d look like the long-lost twins in the movie. This was a surprisingly emotional moment for both of us. You learned that hair is just hair, but I was unexpectedly sad to see your long locks chopped into a bob. You hated the cut at first, but it did grow back quickly—an important childhood rite of passage completed.

Being your mama is a sacred gift and the joy of my life. Your enthusiasm and zest bring so much love and light to our family. You are wholly and completely loved just as you are. Keep shining your beautiful light and leaning into who you are, sister friend. I can’t wait to see all that your seventh year has in store.

xoxo,
Your loving mama

Skiing 2024

2024 was a breakthrough year for the Rallo family’s skiing. With no basketball games on the schedule, our weekends were intentionally free to lean into skiing together. Hazel, Wes, and I improved enough that we no longer needed to split up. Owen has taken to black diamonds with enthusiasm, Wes is steadily building his skills with grit and positivity, and Hazel flies down the slopes without a hint of fear. Reaching this point was a big commitment—mostly on Ty’s part—but it was 100% worth it. This was the first year we spent more time skiing than preparing.

It turns out skiing on the bunny hill and skiing remote parts of the mountain are very different experiences. I’m not a highly skilled skier, so I was hesitant to push myself with kids in tow. But once I made the jump and got closer to the top, I started to truly enjoy the sport. The mountain is stunning, and skiing is such a wonderful way to be outside as a family during the gloomiest part of the year here in the PNW.

We spent the long weekend around MLK Day at Crystal with friends and headed to Bachelor for mid-winter break. Ty has been saying it all along—ski trips really are where it’s at. Eliminating the commute and having a full day on the mountain significantly reduces the stress and lets you focus on fun.

The highlights? Everyone skiing down from the 9,000-foot summit at Bachelor and an unforgettable sunset run at Crystal, pictured below.

Disneyland 2023

We've been wanting to plan a trip back to Disney for multiple years but the timing just hasn't worked out. In preparation for our trip to Namibia in August we've been saving our frequent flyer miles and vacation funds. We ended up booking those flights through Virgin Atlantic, leaving us with a stockpile of miles on Alaska. When we factored free airline tickets into the math and realized we could pop to California for a weekend for a relatively modest price, we planned a spontaneous trip. Owen was six the first time we went and Hazel was six for this trip so it felt like perfect timing.

It was a magical weekend that, once again, made me understand people's obsession with Disney. The kids maintained positive attitudes and we had a blast. The first morning there was definitely some kinks to work out on how to maximize the fast pass, which lines to commit to, etc but we pretty quickly found our groove. We did one day at Disneyland and one day at California Adventure. Disneyland certainly has more to offer but I think we enjoyed California Adventure the most. There were fewer people at California Adventure and lots of carnival type rides we were able to walk right on without waiting in lines. We didn't get to do every ride we'd hope for at Disneyland but felt good about how many we hit in our limitied time. We walked over 10 miles per day and were exhausted by the time we left. A quick trip is great but I may consider staying a bit longer and building in a day or two at the pool if we go back.

The Cars ride was #1 for everyone in our family with Stars Wars coming in at #2 and Soaring Around the World third.
